All drivers in Colorado are legally required to have automobile insurance. However, according to 2019 claims data, 16.3% of Colorado motorists are uninsured, compared to the national average of 12.6%. (
If you have been injured in a car crash and the at fault driver does not have insurance, you may still have an avenue to recover money for your injuries.

If the at-fault driver doesn’t have insurance or does not have enough insurance, your automobile insurance policy may provide for compensation for injuries and losses. Colorado law requires insurance companies to sell Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Insurance as part of every policy sold unless the coverage is specifically rejected in writing. Our uninsured car accident attorneys at Matlin Injury Law will investigate whether you have uninsured motorist coverage and if you do we will help you pursue a claim with your own insurance.

Minimum Insurance Requirements

The State of Colorado requires the following minimum coverages:

  • $25,000 for bodily injury or death to anyone person in an accident;
  • $50,000 for bodily injury or death to all persons in any one accident; and
  • $15,000 for property damage in any one accident.

Under-Insured Motorist Coverage

Similar to uninsured coverage, if the at-fault driver does not have enough insurance to pay all of your bills and expenses, your own insurance policy may pay you directly if you purchase extra insurance coverage called “underinsured motorist coverage (UIM).” UIM pays you in the event that the person at fault for your accident doesn’t have enough insurance to compensate you fully.
